Types of UPVC Door Handles
If your upvc door handle needs replacing it's essential to find the best replacement for your home. Locksmiths can supply and install high-security uPVC door handles that come with additional security features.
The most important measurements you should take are the measurement A (also called PZ) along with the length of the backplate. Take these measurements to make sure that your new uPVC handle will fit.
Lever/Lever
A lever is a rod that pivots around a point. When you apply force to the end, the fulcrum is likely to move in the direction of the force is applied. This motion increases the applied force which allows you to lift or move something that would require more force if you tried to apply directly to the load.
The distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the point where you apply force determines the maximum amount of movement. This is known as the mechanical advantage. The greater the length of the lever, the larger the advantage in terms of mechanical. You can determine the mechanical advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum until the point at which you're applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and where you will end the lever.
Levers can have different effects depending on the way forces are applied. For instance the class 2 lever tends to rotate in the opposite direction to when the force applied to it (like a teeter-totter). If you push on the handle of a door the force will create the same rotational effects as this.
However, levers don't create energy. They simply multiply the force you exert by converting a small amount of effort across a large distance into a larger amount of force that is applied over a smaller distance. This is what enables you to accomplish more in less time, which is why levers are commonly used to lift heavy objects or moving large quantities of cargo. This is also the reason behind the levers you find in a variety of everyday tools, such as crowbars and fishing rods, claws for hammers, and even your own legs when you stand on the hand brake of your vehicle.
Lever/Pad
Lever pad handles, also known as upvc door handles, have levers on each side to operate the multipoint locks. They are available in a variety of variations and finishes, and are suitable for a variety of materials, including UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. upvc replacement door handles are sold in pairs for both the doors, both exterior and interior with screws and spindles included. They are also available in both handed and unhanded versions for different types of users.
They are typically used for new constructions and are fitted to replace existing doors made of upvc. The levers are raised to open all the multipoint locks, and the key is turned to lock or close the door. They provide additional security in comparison to lever handles for doors since the locking mechanism can only be accessed via the inside using keys unless the door is locked.
They're not as secure as a cylinder lock, but they're cost-effective ways to add extra security to your home. The only downside is that they don't provide the same level protection like a cylinder lock and they don't restrict access to the home when the door is left open.
The majority of lever pad upvc door handles that we have in stock are manufactured by the top manufacturers in the industry and are constructed using high quality components. They are also generally supplied with a manufacturer's warranty.
Typically, these will be designed to be compatible with a 92mm lock or the replacement version known as a Paddock lock. They will feature a cylinder with 82mm diameter on the inside and 62mm on the outside. They also come with two spindle followers. Some are supplied with the backplate inserted, while others are removable for different fixing centers.
Lever/Snib
Lever latches are the simplest kind of door handles. Pushing down on the lever triggers a simple latch mechanism inside to keep the door shut, and can be locked using keys. Some lever privacy handles operate similar to the doorknob, however with an additional snib, similar to a doorknob.
A snib button can be very useful, especially for homes where it's important to ensure privacy or security. If your partner arrives at home late from work, you can use the snib so that they aren't allowed in until they're ready to move in. This kind handle can also be put in for doors in the interior, like those in bedrooms where you wish to limit access from outside.
Snib buttons can cause issues in certain situations, particularly when you have locks that are old and warped doors. If the snib is used in error or by a person who isn't accustomed to it, the door may close and shut you out. Most of the time, you can get in by knocking on the door's frame or letterbox, but this isn't ideal.
If your uPVC door has a snib button, we recommend replacing the handle with a contemporary E-LOK 7-Series smart lock. These smart locks can be retrofitted to double-turn pull handle kits. They come with coverplates that hide existing holes to make it a seamless installation. The E-LOK app can be used to open doors using RFID cards or a mechanical key. Passcodes are also offered to ensure security and convenience. The system has been tested for 200,000 cycles in order to ensure its durability. The handles themselves are constructed with a solid metal construction and are BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 for resistance to corrosion.
Lever/Moveable Pad
This popular style of handle is commonly used on front doors. It has the advantage of preventing the door being opened without a key from the outside in the event that the lock has not been deadlocked. This is accomplished by a 'pad' shaped external handle that locks in the gap between the handles and lock case to prevent the latch from being withdrawn or the door opened.
This type of handle is designed to fit uPVC doors that are fitted with multipoint locks which operate via split spindle operations. This kind of operation requires that the internal lever handle and the external pad handle both be fitted to the same lock case. It is a simple change from the current uPVC handles, but it could also require a change to the lock case or even a new set of handle furniture to allow this added functionality.
